Walter A. Scarton, 91, of Masontown, PA, died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 5, 2013. He was born on June 22, 1922 in Portage, PA, son of the late Anthony and Fidalma (Damin) Scarton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary "Ruby" (Tiberi) Scarton on October 18, 2004; sisters, Armeda Grigoletto, Dolores "Dolly" Iachini; brothers, Valerio "Baio" Scarton, Bruno Scarton, and an infant brother; also, son-in-law Ron Petrus; sister-in-law, Pearl Baran; and brother-in-law, John Vincent "J.V." Tiberi.

During WWII he proudly served his country with the United States Army in the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation. He was a Life Member and Past Commander of the Faith-Gray-McArdle VFW Post 4584 and member of the Firing Squad for military honors; Life Member of Fort Mason American Legion Post 423, and member of George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103.

He was a retired Forman with U.S. Steel Corp, and was a member of the Mine Disaster Rescue Team. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, formerly All Saints R.C. Church, where he served on the Parish Council, and was a church Usher for many years.

Walter was the former Mayor of Masontown and served as Masontown Boro Councilman. He was Past President and "Man of the Year" Award recipient for the Masontown Exchange Club, member of the Italo-American Citizens Club, and the Pals Social Club. He will also be remembered for his wonderful winw making skills.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, daughters, Teri Fogt and husband Steve of Bethlehem, PA; Regina Sloan and husband Albert of Uniontown, PA; and Mayor Toni Petrus of Masontown, PA; six grandchildren, Susan Fogt, Julie Fogt, Craig Schuessler, Kim Schuessler, Leslie McLaughlin and husband Frank, Rebecca Palmer and husband Will; three step-grandchildren, Jeremy Sloan, Matt Sloan, and Mary Burnett; two great grandchildren, Gianna Schuessler, Carisa Fogt, nine step-great grandchildren, Alicia Sloan, Emma Sloan, Marley Sloan, Jacob Sloan, Eli Sloan, Abel Sloan, Callum Burnett, Xavier Burnett, and Levi Gall; a sister, Edith "Dita" Geriak of Portage, PA; special family members, Scott Schuessler of Smithfield, PA; brother-in-law, Joe Iachini of Ebensburg, PA; sister-in-law, Dorothy Scarton of Portage, PA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He also leaves behind his "grand-dogs, who knew him as "cookie man", Chloe, Molly, Cody, Ava, Bella, Roxy, and Cassidy.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Fayette Friends of Animals or Fayette County SPCA.

Friends will be received at the Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 515 N. Main St., Masontown, PA, on Tuesday, October 8, from 3-8 p.m.; and on Wednesday, Oct 9, until 9:30 a.m. when Prayers of Transfer will be said.

The Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Masontown, PA, with Rev. Father William G. Berkey as celebrant.

Military honors will be accorded by Fort Mason American Legion Post 423, with Faith-Gray-McArdle VFW Post 4584 as Firing Squad following the funeral mass.

Private interment services will be held for the family.
