Thomas L. Cunningham, age 89, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Uniontown, PA, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at UPMC Passavant Hospital. He was born on May 30, 1921 in Smock, PA, son of the late Wilbur and Harriett Cunningham.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Esther D. (Zeller) Cunningham; brothers, Wilbur Cunningham and Richard Cunningham, and a sister, Alice Firestone.

During WWII he proudly served his country with the United States Army 239th Engineers Battalion. He was a member of the American Legion Post 753, and received commendation from the Fayette County War Veterans for outstanding contribution as a member of the Color Guard and Burial Detail.

He was a coal miner and member of UMWA, retired from Maple Creek Mine, where he was the President of Local Union #5.

Thomas was a 32nd Degree Free Mason in the Fayette Lodge #228. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and friend to many. He enjoyed helping people, and will be remembered for his kindness and great sense of humor.

Left to cherish his memory are four children, twin daughters, Joyce Costa of Stowe, OH, and Joanne Pobiega and husband Gary of Brecksville, OH; Kirby L. Cunningham and wife Patty of Boca Raton, FL; and Jennifer Cunningham of Pittsburgh, with whom he made his home; six grandchildren, Tommy Cunningham, Kristen Cunningham, Joseph Powell, Kelly Brzozowski and husband Ed, Mary Beth Costa, and Danny Costa; two great granddaughters, Emily and Alexis Brzozowski; three sisters, Carrie Amiri and husband Dr. Mohamed Amiri of Lorraine, OH; Esther DeCara and husband Walter of Stowe, OH; and Bonnie Klanduch and husband Frank of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.



Friends will be received in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave., Ext., Uniontown, PA, on Thursday, March 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.; and on Friday, March 4, until 10 a.m.

A Blessing Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Father Michael J. Crookston Officiating.

Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery, Brier Hill, PA, where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 753.
