Stephen John Knapp, 72, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully in his sleep, on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

He was born on October 10, 1953 in Uniontown, son of the late Steve and Catherine (Guy) Knapp.

In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his sister, Pat Schneider; his brother-in-law, Harvey King; and many Knapp and Guy aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Uniontown. He was a 1972 graduate of Uniontown Area High School & LaRoche College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design and Communication.

Steve worked for Newborn Enterprises, Inc. for many years, until his retirement. Throughout his life his immense talents were manifested in many varied interests. He was a marvelous and well-known guitarist after picking it up at the age of fifteen. He played with numerous musicians in formal bands and jam sessions in the local and Pittsburgh area. In the 1970’s, while in college, he was a founding member of Motorhead (not that one) in Pittsburgh and then Peachthief in Uniontown.

From an early age he had a passion for all forms of auto racing that were the subjects of much of his artwork. His many travels to racing events included the 1973 Indianapolis 500, and tracks such as Mid-Ohio, Summit Point, Nelsons Ledges, and the Pittsburgh Vintage Gran Prix.

Steve’s love and appreciation for the natural world was nurtured through his many hikes and forays into the local mountains, and by rock climbing at landmark walls like White Rocks and Seneca Rocks in particular. He knew and appreciated every inch of our mountains. Our family treasures the memories of Steve leading us in the after-dinner Thanksgiving tradition of climbing up to Pine Knob . . . everyone, even babies in backpacks.

He is survived by his brother James Knapp (Susan); sister, Stephanie King (dec. Harvey); brother-in-law, Richard Schneider; nieces, Katie, Jennifer, Jessica, Lizz; and nephew, Jimmy; five great nephews and two great nieces; and his special Goddaughters, Jessica Beckman and Lizz Bowling. Steve will also be missed by his many friends that he truly admired and appreciated. At every point of life, he would create deep lasting friendships.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist RC Church, 50 Jefferson Street, Uniontown. A time for food, family, friends, and fellowship will follow the mass.

A private inurnment will take place later in his father, Steve’s, grave at St. Procopius Cemetery in New Salem, PA.
