Michael "Mike" Merkosky, Jr., 66, of Oliver, PA, passed away, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Uniontown Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on August 25, 1946 in Buffington, PA, son of Michael Merkosky, Sr. and Catherine (Olanick) Merkosky.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: John Olanick, Steve Merkosky, Pearl Roby, Anna Marie Arensberg; and also a nephew, Danny Merkosky.
Mike was a member of St. Therese de Lisieux Roman Catholic Church, and was an active volunteer for Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers for many years. He retired from US Steel Corp. Clairton Works, where he was a crane operator for 17 years. After he retired, he worked in construction, and was a member of Pittsburgh Construction Workers Local 1058.
An avid sportsman, Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing, and golfing was a priority. He was loved greatly in this life, and will be deeply missed by his family, and many friends.
Surviving is his wife of 43 years Lorraine (Danowski) Merkosky, whom he married on June 14, 1969; four brothers and sisters, Alex Merkosky and wife Maryann of Oliver, PA; Dora Maust and husband George of Chardon, OH; Sophia Vavrek of Uniontown, PA; and Frank Merkosky of Cleveland, OH; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Antoinette and Robert Fagioletti of McMurray, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews, and their families.
Friends will be received in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave., Ext., Uniontown, PA, on Sunday, December 16, from 2 p.m. - 9 p.m; and Monday, December 17, until 9:15, when Prayers of Transfer will be said.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday in St. Therese de Lisieux Roman Catholic Church, 61 Mill St., Uniontown, PA, with Monsignor Michael W. Matusak as Celebrant.
Interment will follow at Mt. St. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown, PA.
The Parish Wake Service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
