Obituary

Michael Simon (Johnny) John, 85, of Lemont Furnace, died Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2018, with his loving family at his side. He was born April 23, 1933, son of the late Michael (Mickey) James John and Ursula (Lucille) Renzi John. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Julia Marie John.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Henrietta Joanne (Showman) John; children: Jeffrey John and wife, Debra, of Logansport, IN; Michelle Komacek and husband, Stan, of Uniontown, Kathleen Miller and husband, Keith, of Uniontown; and David John and wife, Beth, of Orlando, FL. Michael found his greatest pride and happiness in his seven grandchildren: Brandon Seehoffer of Washington, D.C.; Anastasia John of Goshen, IN; Kelly Miller of Pittsburgh; Jeremiah John of Belmont, N.H.; Brenna John of Orlando, FL; Moira John of Indianapolis, IN, and Abby Miller of Uniontown.

An educator, entrepreneur, grandfather, father and father figure to many, Michael lived life fully through his heart. Although he was an only child, he grew up with numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles whom he loved dearly and are left to cherish his memory, including his uncle Fouad John. He had a way of making each person feel as though they were the most special person in the world to him, because they were. Always proud of his Lebanese and Italian heritages, Michael wrote and published a book about the Hanna John family history.

He was a member of St. George Maronite Catholic Church. Michael served in the 101 st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Captieux, France. He worked for his grandparents at Simon's Wholesale in Uniontown and later started his own businesses: first, Sanitary Bottling Works, where he made Chocolate Bunny soda and bottled Hires root beer and Virginia Dare sodas and later, John's Lawn Ornaments. In addition, Michael worked as an elementary teacher at St. Joseph's School on South Mount Vernon Avenue, Uniontown; Smock School; and, for 33 years, the Uniontown Area School District, retiring in 1996. He was a 1952 graduate of St. John's High School, and a graduate of Waynesburg College in 1965.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mount St. Macrina and Amedysis Hospice for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount St. Macrina or St. George Maronite Catholic Church.

Friends will be received in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown, Pa., on Thursday (today) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; and until 10:15 a.m. on Friday.

The Maronite Funeral and Divine Liturgy will follow at 11 a.m. in St. George Maronite Catholic Church, 6 Lebanon Terrace, Uniontown, Pa. with Rev. Father El-Badaoui Habib as celebrant.

Interment will be held at Sylvan Heights Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by George C. Marshall Amvets Post 103.
