Obituary

Mrs. Mary Jo (Maust) Mattia, 87, passed away on June 11, 2025 at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Uniontown on June 20, 1937 to the late Charles and Christina Petrone Maust, Sr.

Mary Jo graduated from Uniontown High School, class of 1955.

She married John Mattia, Jr. on March 16, 1955. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1998. He was retired, after twenty-two years of service, from United States Marine Corp.

Mary Jo was a member of St. John R.C. Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic War Vets Aux. Post 1669, life member of the North Union V.F.W. Post 8543 and the D.A.V.A. Chapter 58.

Mary Jo was both mother and father to her three children while John was deployed on multiple deployments and three tours to Vietnam with the U.S.M.C. and Navy Sea Bees.  She had acquired the nickname "Sarg" through those years, and then the family returned to Uniontown after John's retirement in 1973.  She was also known by many as an "adopted" "Mom" and "Grandma" through the years of her life.

She is survived by her children, James E. Mattia and wife Jane of Lemont Furnace, and Mary Louise DeChessero and husband Terry of Uniontown; five grandchildren, Mark Mattia and wife Wendy of Donegal, Tara Smith and Chris Smith of Lemont Furnace, Terri Linn Vansickle of Uniontown, Michael Veno and Sarah of Lemont Furnace, and Geno DeChessero of Uniontown; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Anna Margaret Sparks of Chalk Hill; four sisters-in-law, Rheba Maust of Williamsburg, VA, Janet Maust of Hopwood, Elizabeth Maust of Hopwood, and Dolly M. of Youngwood; a special Aunt to Kristie Sparks Belan and Patrick A. Sparks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by a daughter, Carmel Maust Veno; four brothers, Paul Maust, Charles Maust, Jr., James Maust, and Elmo Maust; a nephew and godchild, Stephen Sparks; and brother-in-law, Zeb Sparks.

Visitation for Mary Jo will be held at the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown, PA 15401 on Thursday, June 12 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. John R.C. Church, 50 Jefferson St., Uniontown, PA 15401 on Friday, June 13th at 10 AM, with prayers of transfer at 9:15 AM at the funeral home.

Interment is in St. Mary Cemetery in Uniontown.
