Lois “Vonnie” (Gordon) Hewitt, age 94, of Lemont Furnace, PA, was guided home to be with those she loved in heaven on October 25, 2026.
She was born on January 28, 1932 in Brier Hill and was the middle child of the late Frances Elizabeth (Bryner) Gordon and Archie Gordon.
She met the love of her life, William Cleveland “Bill” Hewitt, at a square dance at Shady Grove 16 years later. “Uncle Bill,” as we knew him, offered to give the family a ride home on that cold January night.
During World War II, Lois wrote daily to her uncle who was serving in Europe. She would repeat this several years later when Uncle Bill was called to serve in the Korean Conflict in 1951.
Lois began working for West Penn Power in 1949, which enabled her to buy her family their first automobile. That was only the beginning. She rose through the ranks to a high management position at a time when the ‘glass ceiling’ prevented women from doing so. She was a true trailblazer, breaking barriers for women and inspiring them through her many civic duties.
Lois retired from West Penn Power in 1994 after 44 ½ years as the first female Division Manager. She served as a board member and in other capacities for the Greene County United Way, Economic Education Foundation, and Greene County Industrial Development Corporation. She was also a member of the Greene County Job Center task force, Greene County Redevelopment finance committee, the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce, the Greene County Branch of the Pennsylvania Economy League, the National Home Builders Association, the Uniontown Chamber of Commerce industrial committee, the Connellsville Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Uniontown Business and Professional Women, Order of the Eastern Star Lodge 263, and Community of Faith Methodist Church. She and her husband, Bill, spent their retirement traveling and enjoying their families and hobbies.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Williams Cleveland “Bill” Hewitt; her sister, Elva G. Downs and her husband James; brother Albert Gordon and his wife Ruth Ann; her mother-in-law, Melvine Marie (Gallentine) Hewitt; and her father-in-law, William Orville Hewitt.
Left to cherish Lois’s memory are many friends and special nieces and nephews, Lori Wasler, Eugene and Charlotte Gordon, Heather (Wasler) and Taris Vrcek, Jennifer (Gordon) and Robert Leichliter, and Kelly Gordon.
Visitation will be held at the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown, PA 15401, on Friday, October 30th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 31st at 11 AM.
Interment is in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
