John Sekura of (Uledi) Uniontown, PA, died on Monday, September 9, 2013, at the age of 99, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. He was born in Manhattan, NY, on March 31, 1914.

He was the last member of his immediate family, preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Sekura; three sisters, Mary, Annie, Helen; a brother, Peter; and a niece, Diane Sekura.

John was a surveyor, retired from the Pennsylvania State Highway Department. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II as a surveyor, including making maps for the Invasion of Normandy/D-Day, behind the lines (in England), June 1944. He had been a logger in the Pacific Northwest prior to enlisting in the Army.

After retirement from PENNDOT, John moved to Cocoa, Florida, in 1979, where he lived for over 30 years, continuing his adventures on the eastern Space Coast, visiting Timacuan Native American and other sites in his canoe, or in the wilds on foot alone, including monitoring an eagle nest for the U.S. government for 13 years. He loved nature, and camped in the Smokey Mountains as often as possible. John returned home to PA just last October to live in Uledi/Revere, with a view of the Chestnut Ridge from his porch.

He was an avid bowler his entire life, scoring over 700 on a series in the peak of his bowling - and was even bowling at Manor Lanes in Hopwood just six months before he passed on. Just a month ago, John drove a golf ball 125 yards at Franko's Golf Center.

John lived independently all of his life, and felt he was in heaven in the mountains of Pennsylvania, his home. He felt an affinity for George Washington, a fellow surveyor; and a reverence for Native American culture.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister-in-law, Barbara Sekura; niece, Linda Sekura; nephew, Terence Sekura and wife Saida and their daughter (John's great-niece), Alexandra; nephew, Andrew Sekura and wife Devi and their sons (John's great-nephews), Brandon and Shaun.

Friends will be received in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 North Gallatin Ave., Ext. Uniontown, PA, on Friday, September 13, from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM.

The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in St. John Byzantine Church Cemetery in Hopwood, PA, where military honors will be accorded at graveside by AMVETS Post 103.
