James R. Rhoades, 92 of Uniontown, formerly of Masontown, Pa., passed away on Monday November 4, 2013 at his home with his loving family by his side.
He was born December 19, 1920 in Masontown, Pa., a son of the late James T., & Mary Beatrice (Mason) Rhoades.
He graduated from Masontown High School class of 1937.
James was a retired assistant Post Master in Masontown, Pa.
He owned/operated his own business "Rhoades Plumbing & Electric" on River Avenue in Masontown, Pa., for many years, but what he was most proud of was his many years as a boy scout leader and is the proud owner of the Silver Beaver Award as well as many other awards, He is credited with starting the Boy Scouts in The Masontown Methodist Church, he was also instrumental in starting up the winter camporee.
James was a member of The Masontown United Methodist Church.
James was the oldest living member of the Masontown Volunteer Fire Department, in which he was involved for most of his adult life, he loved working bingo as well as the community service & getting up all hours of the night to respond to the call of the "fire whistle" .
.He was a lifetime member of Faith-Gray-McArdle VFW Post 4584, & The Fort Mason American Legion Post 423 of Masontown.
He was also a member of the "Friends of the Masontown cemetery" and helped restore it to its present day asset to the community.
He was very proud to serve in WWII with the United States Army with a rank of Sergeant served in Austria & Germany; He was awarded "The Bronze Star" for heroic achievement on Friday, April 20, 1945 in Germany.
He enjoyed digging into the past and looking up his family tree.
He was predeceased by his parents, and by his beloved daughter Doris Drake.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Genevieve (Brice) Rhoades, children; James T Rhoades and his wife Barbara, Ree Enlow, Jeannie King, Mark Outrich and his wife Tina, Barbara Adamson and her husband Barry, Michael Outrich and his wife Barbara, grandchildren; David Drake, Jennifer Brubaker, James Rhoades and his wife Laura, Erik Pohovich, Bryan King, Sarah Jaquette and her husband C.H., Tony Outrich and his wife Lindsay, Jamie Lynn Outrich, Jessica Outrich, Ashley Hollowood and her husband Bill, Barry Alan Adamson, great grandchildren; Alexandra Brubaker, Madelyn Brubaker, Ella Rhoades, Kayla Pohovich, Stephanie Pohovich, Mason Pohovich, Michael King, Cody King, Cam King, Claire Jaquette and Hayden Hollowood.
Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOME, INC. 515 North Main Street, Masontown, PA 15461, on, Thursday November 7, 2013 4-9 PM and on Friday November 8, 2013, until 10 a.m. when a service will be held with Reverend Charles Prevot officiating.
Entombment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa.
Military Honors will be accorded by Faith-Gray-McArdle VFW Post 4584 & The Fort Mason American Legion Post 423.
The Masontown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a service on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
