Obituary

Gary G. Sontheimer, M.D., age 80 of Uniontown, Pa., died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, with his loving wife Joyce at his side. He was a dedicated Physician and General Practitioner for 45 years in Fayette County.

He was born on April 24, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of the late Carl and Mary (Beck) Sontheimer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Ronald Sontheimer.

Dr, Sontheimer earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Pitt University and was employed as a Flight Test Engineer for Boeing Aircraft, Seattle, Washington for 3 years. He graduated from the University of Heidelberg, West Germany, with a degree in Medicine, and practiced Family Medicine at West Virginia University Medical Center from 1972-1979. He opened a General Private Practice in Masontown in 1979, and later in Uniontown, until his recent retirement. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.

His wife of 38 years, and devoted nurse of their practice, Joyce Ann (Cheresnye) Sontheimer enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and Acapulco, and other destinations over the years. He was a collector of classical music, was an avid bowler, and a member of the Manor League Majors. He also enjoyed white water rafting, golfing, and restoring his home, something dear to his heart, with attention to detail and a perfectionist's eye. He was a gifted and compassionate man, who made it his life's work to heal others.

He leaves behind his loving wife Joyce, their son, Erick Sontheimer and his wife Diana of Uniontown; grandchildren, Anastacia Sontheimer and Mackenna Sontheimer; stepgrandchildren, Chasidy Preston and Lexus Wade; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave., Ext., Uniontown, Pa., on Thursday, August 17, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 18, at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 50 Jefferson St., Uniontown, Pa. with Rev. Father James D. Tringhese as celebrant.

Interment will be privately held for the immediate family at Mount St. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa.
