Obituary

Elizabeth Ann (Chernitsky) Hudak "Betty" 89 passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

She was born on December 1, 1928 in Juniata, Pa, daughter of Matthew and Mary (Radachy) Chernitsky. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: August, Thomas, John, Matthew, and Edward, sisters: Mary Margaret, and Dorothy Tupta, loving husband of 58 years, Joseph Andrew Hudak, daughter, Marlene, daughter-in-law, Shannon (Jordan) Hudak, and great-grandson, Samuel Thomas Varndell.

Betty grew up in Juniata, Pa where she attended Juniata Grade School and later moved to Smock, Pa where she met her future husband, Joe, and they attended Uniontown High School. However, her family relocated to Connellsville, Pa during her senior year and she graduated from Connellsville High School with the Class of 1946. She worked as a clerk at Sembowers Market and a waitress at Bud Murphy's in Connellsville preceding her marriage to Joe in 1948.

Betty had a blessed life. Left to cherish her memory are her two sisters, Helen Piwowar and Sister Anastasia Chernitsky SCN (Sisters of Charity in Nazareth), special niece, Anna Marie Trimbath and her husband Patrick. She was the mother of ten and is survived by nine of her children, Elizabeth M. Varndell (Harry) of Price, Utah, Joseph Anthony Hudak of Smithfield, Pa, David M. Hudak of Waynesburg, Pa, Jane Anne Hudak of Uniontown, Pa., Mary Elaine Williams (David) of Uniontown, Pa., William J. Hudak Sr. (Debra), Smithfield, Pa., Matthew P. Hudak Sr. (Veronica) of Clarksburg, WV., Fr. Mark J. Hudak, OFM of Cincinnati, OH, and Edward P. Hudak (Lisa) of Clarksburg, WV., twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty and Joe began their married life and family in Smock, Pa and moved to Uniontown, PA in 1955 joining Saint Mary Nativity Church as active members for a lifetime. She was a member of the Saint Mary Confraternity of Christian Mothers, she held an officer position with the Altar Rosary Society, was a Den Mother for BSA Pack 620 Cub Scouts, and was a volunteer cafeteria worker at St. Mary and St. John Evangelist Schools. She had a beautifully light soprano voice and enjoyed singing with the church's Liturgical and Funeral Service Choirs. She carried her joy of music sharing her talent in the Volunteer Music Ministry at St. Mt. Macrina Nursing Home and often helped serve meals at St. Mt. Macrina's House of Prayer. Her abiding faith lead her to the Order of Secular Franciscans (OFS) associated with the prior St. Anthony Franciscan Friary in Uniontown where she served as Secretary for many years. She was quite the social butterfly enjoying the company of others as a member of the Saint Mary Golden Club. Her civic duty was always met, and her patriotic pride and duty were recognized as an Auxiliary Member of the American Legion Post 423.

Betty was one of the Pittsburgh Pirates greatest fan. She loved the Pittsburgh Pirate baseball team and would stay up late into the night to watch her Bucs win or lose. She also enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pens, but her heart belonged to the Buccos.

Betty's life revolved around Faith, Family, and Friends. Her passion for Jesus Christ and devotion to his Mother Mary were profound. Even while hospitalized Betty was a Prayer Warrior. She said the Rosary and attended daily Mass, thanks to EWTN Channel 21. Her presence in the first row of St. Mary Church will certainly feel empty.

She loved entertaining her large family and friends. There was always room for one more seat at her table. She delighted in a game of cards 500 Rummy with her sister, Helen, or a rousing dice game of Greedy with family and friends. Holidays and birthdays were always a constant reason for celebrations. She had an amazing memory and would send birthday greetings to her many family members and friends along with Get Well and Sympathy cards of condolences.

Betty was a shining example of Christian kindness. Her sweet smile and sharp wit will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the Staff and nurses from Fayette Home Care Team 38 and Fayette Home Care Hospice Team 39 for their wonderful support and compassion.
