Former Uniontown Mayor, Edward R. Fike, 85, of Uniontown, passed away, unexpectedly, on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the Uniontown Hospital.
He was born in Uniontown on January 19, 1941 to the late Ross E. and Jessie Workman Fike.
He spent his childhood thrashing grain on his father’s farm in Markleysburg. Ed graduated from South Union High School, class of 1959. As a child, coming down the mountains, when he saw all the lights of Uniontown, he said to his Dad, ”Daddy, someday I’m going to be mayor of that town, just like you are of yours.” And he said his dad looked at him like he was crazy. Being mayor was literally a life-long dream. When Ed left Markleysburg he came down the mountain with nothing but the shirt on his back and his 1952 Buick.
He accomplished that dream of being mayor in 2008. He served as Uniontown City mayor for 12 years. From making executive decisions, to keeping the city afloat, to plowing snow and picking up garbage, he was always hands on. He loved the community and the people he served; and he never missed an opportunity to stop and talk to the employees at the offices in City Hall. He was a great public speaker. He did the Memorial Day service speech every year at Sylvan Heights, and was so proud to do so. He had a very patriotic spirit, and ended every speech with “God Bless You, and God Bless the United States of America”. During his tenure he received various awards; and he cherished his time as a public servant. It truly was a dream come true for him.
He was a businessman all his life. He began his career as a contractor for the United States Postal Service in 1965 carrying bulk mail to various destinations throughout the state with forty employees between Ed Fike Trucking and Fike Bros. Trucking. He loved trucks and he loved trucking, still hauling mail until his recent illness. He was also the owner of Parks Casino for over 30 years and landlord of several buildings. He was a member of the Greensburg Masonic Lodge since 1974.
Ed had many endeavors with his brother Harry; Calabrece Homes in Toronto, OH, The Village Barn in Hopwood, Royal Arms Apartments, The Ringside Lounge, Fike Brothers Trucking, Penn State Car Wash and Penn State Auto and Economy Gas. Ed and Harry have enjoyed a very strong bond throughout their entire lives.
Anyone who knew Ed knew how much he loved Eat-n-Park and the special bond he had with the employees that worked there. They were like family to him. Any day of the week you could find “Old Blue” in the parking lot, and many times friends would stop in when they knew he was there.
Ed always had a smile on his face and loved making others smile with his quick wit. He always rooted for the underdog and was the first one to lend a helping hand. He cherished his friends and community, but more than anything he cherished his family and his love for God. Ed believed his greatest accomplishment in life was being the father to his five daughters.
Ed is survived by his five beloved daughters, all of Uniontown, Kim Fike Marshall and husband John, Renae Phillipy and husband Peter, Deneen Fike Willbern and husband Chris, Gina Gatti, and Felicia Fike Podolinski and husband Johnny; grandchildren, Brent Coughenour and fiancé Angie, Whitney Roeder and husband Casey, Demi Petrovich and husband Dan, John Marshall, Jr. and wife Stevi, Ashley Barrett and husband Gotti, Luke Marshall and wife Brittni, Corey Don Pauling, and Adrianna Gatti; great grandchildren, Savannah and Sawyer Pauling, Amelia Barrett, John Marshall, III, Elliott Marshall, and Theodore Marshall; a sister, Judy Fearer of Pleasant Unity; a brother, Harry J. Fike and wife Cindy of Uniontown; several nieces and nephews; special niece, Brandi Fike; and sidekick, John Shumar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Ann Ackerman and Nancy Friend; and a brother, Ross E. Fike.
Though he is gone, the story he wrote - from a young boy in the mountains to the mayor of a city he loved - will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family invites all who knew Ed to share memories, stories, and tributes - because a life like his is best remembered together.
Visitation for Ed will be held at the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown, PA 15401, on Thursday, March 19th from 12 to 8 PM. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 20th at 12 noon, with visitation before from 10 AM to 12 PM.
Interment is in Asher Glade Cemetery in Friendsville, MD.
