Barbara Hunter Walters Syphers age 71 of Hopwood, PA passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Uniontown Hospital. She was born in Coatesville PA, the daughter of Verta and Seth Hunter. Barbara Graduated from Oxford Area High School, Oxford PA in 1959 and completed the Penn State Legal Assistant Program in 1992. A hard worker all her life, she held employment at an A&P grocery, a clerical position at Lincoln University, and 9 law firms, retiring from the service of Judge Leskinen in 2002.
Barbara loved to sing, performing in the Pa State Youth Choir and Oxford High School musicals. She directed the adult choir at the First Baptist Church in Oxford, the youth choir at Brownfield United Methodist Church, ending with the adult choir of the Community United Methodist Church of Uniontown Larger Parish up to the recent break for the summer. She was active in the Community United Methodist Church, serving on the board, financial secretary, and as a member of the United Methodist Women.
She had been suffering with shingles for 5 months, in addition to long-term arthritis, osteopenia, degenerative spinal condition, and heart problems. She succumbed to congestive heart failure.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Shirley, her brothers Warren, Leo, and Wilburn Cash, and her first husband Dennis Walters. She is survived by her husband James Syphers; son Dennis Walters Jr. and wife Amy; daughter Marcia Griffith and husband Jerry; step-children Gail, Dale, Paul, and Neil Syphers and 9 grandchildren including Lucas and Cory Turner, Mya and Tristan Walters of the Uniontown Area, and Megan Walters of Collegeville PA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Barbara's long-term struggle with pain is over. She is now singing with the Heavenly Choir and meeting with her Lord.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service for Barbara will be held at the Community Methodist Church, 1246 West Penn Ave., Uniontown on Saturday, June 8 at 4:00 pm.
