Alfreda Sadlo Kopec, age 91, of Masontown (formerly of Edenborn) passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013. She was born December 1, 1921, to the late John and Angela (Kwasnik) Sadlo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Louis A. Kopec, infant son Thaddeus, grandson Joshua Kopec and great granddaughter Amelia Rae Frantz.
Alfreda was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. For all of her 91 years, she remained active and enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A special joy for the family was to gather at her house for holiday celebrations, particularly the special Polish Christmas Eve dinner with her homemade pieroghis. She was proud of her Polish heritage and was an avid Pirate, Penguin and Steeler fan. Freda was a dear and faithful friend to many and a treasured aunt of many nieces and nephews. She kept in touch with all by frequent telephone calls and by always sending cards to remember birthdays and anniversaries.
Alfreda was an active member of St. Thomas R.C. Church for more than 75 years. She was a founding and active member of both the Church's Christian Mothers and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Edenborn V.F.D.
She was a 1940 graduate of German Twp. High School. During World War II, she worked in defense plants in New Jersey and Baltimore. She was a retired U.S. Postal Service employee, having worked at the McClellandtown Post Office for many years.
Alfreda is survived by five children: Bernadine (Dennis) Bonessa of Pittsburgh; Bernard (Karen) Kopec of Masontown; Lud (Terrie) Kopec of Masontown; Angela (Bruce) Magerko of Edenborn; and Thomas (Kim) Kopec of Grindstone. She will also be missed by her grandchildren: Brian (Alka) Kopec, Teresa (Doug) Seaman, Cristy (Ken) Frantz, Jason (Janae) Kopec, Sarah (Jason) Belczyk, Dirk Bonessa, Katie Magerko and her fiance Mark Schuessler, Drew Bonessa, Jacob Magerko and Andrew Kopec. Surviving great grandchildren are: Dylan, Carson, and Bria Seaman; Avinash, Rajan and Meera Kopec; Vaughn, Trenton and Brooks Belczyk; Crosby and Camilla Frantz; and Carter and Kinley Kopec. Alfreda will also be missed by her sister Wanda Valusek, brother-in-law Edward Kopec, sister-in-law Louise Manchas, cousin Ted Opilo and many dear nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 515 N. Main St., Masontown, PA, (today) Thursday, April 25, from 2 p.m.- 9 p.m.; and on Friday, April 26, until 9:15 a.m., when closing prayers will be said.
The Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Footedale, PA, with Rev. Father Peter L. Peretti as Celebrant. Interment will be held at St. Thomas Cemetery, Footedale, PA.
